Biogarden Prep

So that you have healthy veggies when you arrive

That’s what it looks like when you stay at our LA FINCA and get veggies everyday from our Biogarden.

As winter slowly fades, March marks a crucial time for gardeners to prepare their gardens for the upcoming spring season. We are also busily prepping our biogarden at LA FINCA for you to enjoy our delicious seasonal veggies during your stay. This month is ideal for laying the groundwork for healthy and robust summer crops like tomatoes, courgettes, and aubergines 🌱🍅.

Key Tasks for March

During the next few weeks, we will focus on the following essential tasks: soil preparation, mulching, crop rotation and space planning.

Mulching with straw or dried grass will prevent the soil from drying out during the hot summer months to come.

We will begin by aerating and enriching your soil with organic compost. This will provide essential nutrients for your future crops. Then we will apply a layer of mulch to protect the soil, retain moisture, and naturally feed your plants. Each year we also rotate our crops to maintain soil balance, optimize nutrient use, and reduce the risk of pests and diseases. Before planting our seedlings we will then select areas that are ready for planting at the right moment to enjoy early harvests.

Due to different needs of the veggies we plant them at the right time and rotate to get maximum results.

Preparing for Summer Crops

Although it's not yet time to plant tomatoes, courgettes, and aubergines directly outdoors, we have started preparing them in protected environments:

Seedlings Indoors: We already sowed these vegetables in a warm, sheltered spot to give them a head start before transplanting them outside when the weather stabilizes.

Climate Control: We are also monitoring nighttime temperatures, as the nights are still chilly even in the Mediterranean. We protect our seedlings with covers or cloches if necessary.

Moderate Watering: Thanks to the heavy raining at the moment in Mallorca it is easy to keep the soil consistently moist but we have to be careful to avoid overwatering, which can damage young roots.

Additional Gardening Tips for March

In mild climates, such as the Mediterranean, we are also starting to sow hardy vegetables like broad beans, parsnips, carrots, onions, spinach, and salsify directly outdoors. As we have some fruit trees in our orchard at LA FINCA we have already completed any remaining pruning before new growth begins.

In Mallorca you can harvest nearly all year round…

Can Nothing Be Harvested in Mallorca Right Now?

Although the real harvest hasn’t begun yet, in Mallorca, March is a great time to enjoy some early products!

  • Citrus Fruits: Oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are typically ripe and ready for picking. They are winter fruits really and were originally green instead of orange and yellow…

  • Leafy Greens: Spinach, kale, and lettuce are thriving in the mild spring weather and contain a healthy amount of

  • Herbs: Fresh herbs like parsley, rosemary, and thyme can be harvested regularly.

Conclusion

March is a pivotal month for gardeners, setting the stage for a productive summer. By focusing on soil preparation, crop rotation, and planning for future harvests, we'll ensure a thriving biogarden and lots of fresh veggies and fruits during your next stay.
