Sunshine, Sea & Traditions
Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, bursts into life in spring. The almond blossoms might be fading, but the island is awash with wildflowers, painting the landscape in vibrant hues of yellow and white surrounded by intense light green.
Easter in Mallorca, known as Setmana Santa (Holy Week), is a deeply religious affair, blending solemn processions with the joys of the burgeoning spring. Whoever has been to Spain during this time knows the strangely hooded figures that process along the streets carrying candles and heavy holy statutes playing sad music.
Especially Easter Sunday is a time for family gatherings and feasting. You'll find locals enjoying traditional Mallorcan cuisine, often featuring lamb.
Culinary Tip: You definitely have to try panades, savory pastries filled with lamb or pork, and rubiols, sweet crescent-shaped pastries filled with ricotta cheese or jam. Yummy!
What to do?
Easter is also the start of staying longer outdoors. Often temperatures will even rise up to T-Shirt and Shorts quality. Why not visit the local markets with fresh produce, flowers, and local crafts, offering a taste of Mallorcan life?
With longer daylight hours and pleasant temperatures not too hot and not too cold, Easter is an ideal time to explore Mallorca's stunning natural beauty. Hiking in the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, cycling through picturesque villages, or simply relaxing on one of the island's many beautiful beaches are all popular activities.
Weather prognostics: Easter falls in mid-to-late spring in Mallorca, and the weather is generally mild and sunny.
Typical Temperatures: Expect daytime temperatures to range from 16°C to 20°C (61°F to 68°F). Evenings can be cooler, dropping to around 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F), so packing layers is advisable.
Sunshine: You can anticipate plenty of sunshine, making it perfect for outdoor activities.
Rainfall: April is generally a drier month compared to the winter months, but occasional showers are still possible. They are usually short-lived.
However, caution is advised because just like this Easter, weather can be crazy, even with snow! Just like a saying goes: April does what it wants…
From LA FINCA’s pool you can see the Tramuntana Mountains.
Medieval Charm & La Dolce Vita
Bordering on the over-crowed and very touristy area of Tuscany, lies our LA VILLA. Directly in the “green heart of Italy” lies Umbria, which offers a different yet equally captivating Easter experience. Here, rolling hills dotted with medieval towns and cypress trees provide a stunning backdrop for a more culinary and culturally rich holiday.
Our LA VILLA is surrounded by our own vineyards, why not indulge in a winecation?
Umbria also observes Settimana Santa with solemnity. Towns that are nearby our Italian villa, like Assisi, hold particularly significant religious events, including processions and special church services.
Spello's flower displays for Corpus Domini (which falls later in spring but showcases the region's artistic traditions) offer a glimpse into the region's dedication to beauty and celebration.
While Easter itself is primarily religious, you might find local spring festivals or markets beginning to pop up, celebrating the arrival of warmer weather and fresh produce.
Umbrian cuisine is hearty and flavourful, often featuring lamb, truffles (depending on the season), and regional wines. Easter meals are a time for families to come together and enjoy these local specialties. Look out for traditional Easter cakes and sweets.
What to do?
Top experience idea: Book our truffle hunting tour with our expert and discover these treasures hidden in the woods surrounding our LA VILLA. Afterwards you can feast on them with fresh pasta and an exclusive wine tasting in our own Degosteria.
Explore nearby charming medieval towns like Orvieto, Gubbio, Spoleto, and Montefalco. Wander through their ancient streets, visit historic churches, and soak in the atmosphere.
The Umbrian countryside is perfect for hiking, cycling, and enjoying the blossoming landscapes. Spring wildflowers add splashes of colour to the lush green hills.
Weather prognostics: Easter in Umbria brings a noticeable improvement in the weather after the colder winter months.
Typical Temperatures: Daytime temperatures generally range from 14°C to 18°C (57°F to 64°F). Evenings can be quite cool, dropping to around 5°C to 9°C (41°F to 48°F).
Sunshine: While not as consistently sunny as Mallorca, you can expect a good amount of sunshine, interspersed with some cloudy days.
Rainfall: April in Umbria can be a bit unpredictable, with a high chance of rain showers. It's wise to be prepared for both sunshine and potential wet spells. Just like the current news show even flooding can occur. However, in Umbria and as our LA VILLA sits on top of a hill, nothing can happens. And we have huge chimney in the main house to create wonderful cosy days in front of a warm fire with an exquisite glass of our wine from our own Villa Bucher Winery.
