Is Mallorca still worth It?

The turquoise water in the bays of Mallorca invite to a swim.

For travelers outside the European Union seeking a dreamy European escape, such as Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands, presents an enticing blend of stunning landscapes, rich culture, and convenient accessibility. Many events that happen every year on the island showcase Mallorca's vibrant cultural scene and diverse offerings for both locals and tourists.

A Celebrity Magnet

The Mediterranean island is increasingly becoming a destination of longing for travelers worldwide. In 2024, over 150,000 American tourists visited the Balearic Islands, marking a 20 percent increase compared to the previous year. Among these were several celebrities that find Mallorca simply magical.

Zuckerberg, the Kardashians & Co.

Samuel L. Jackson vacationed together with their families during the summer. They explored Palma de Mallorca, visited Gothic churches, and celebrated Independence Day on a yacht. Kylie and Kendall Jenner, along with their mother Kris Jenner, spent time on the island too. They enjoyed boat tours and shared photos on social media. Also, Tech-Giant Mark Zuckerberg was spotted cruising with his family on a luxury yacht off Mallorca. Action-star Tom Cruise visited Mallorca twice in 2024, including a brief trip just for lunch. Michelle Obama made her third visit to Mallorca, staying at a luxury finca.

Ed Sheeran was seen enjoying the nightlife in Palma in Spring. And for the new series “Lioness” Zoe Saldana spent time with her family on the island, but also Morgan Freeman dined at local restaurants in Palma multiple times during the filming of this series. As the island is a popular shooting destination you will stumble upon a celebrity sooner rather than later.

United Offers Direct Flights

With United Airlines now offering seasonal, direct flights from New York/Newark to Palma de Mallorca three times a week until the end of September, this Mediterranean paradise is closer than ever. United is the only company to operate between the United States and Mallorca.

This beautiful pier can be found in the north-east of the island near Alcudia.

The antique train to Sóller is a fantastic way to discover the island.

Mountains and Nature

For outdoor enthusiasts, the island offers natural parks, hiking and walking trails, cycling routes, and rock climbing opportunities. The Serra de Tramuntana mountains provide dramatic scenery and panoramic views. The island has established itself in the USA as an alternative to the overcrowded coasts of Italy and southern France, with the Tramuntana as a counterpoint to Tuscany and the glamorous marinas as the Mediterranean answer to the Côte d'Azur.

The winding streets through the Tramuntana Mountains are nothing for weak stomachs.

Art

Mallorca's art scene is vibrant and diverse, offering a rich tapestry of cultural experiences for art enthusiasts. The island has become a focal point for both established and emerging artists, with numerous galleries and museums showcasing a wide range of artistic styles and mediums. One of Mallorca’s best known artists is Joan Miró. His works, bright colours and simple forms, can be seen in different museums. Visit the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró to indulge in his surrealistic works in red, blue, and yellow.

Miró is Mallorca’s best known painter with bright colours and simple forms.

Palma de Mallorca, the island's capital, is home to several notable contemporary art galleries all distributed over the old town. A hidden gem is the Pelaires Gallery situated in an old noble townhouse. Mallorca boasts several significant art museums that showcase both local and international artists. The best know is the Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. Opened in 2004, this museum houses over 800 artworks from renowned international artists and those connected to the Balearic Islands and is one of the biggest museums on the island. It features works by Gauguin, Picasso, Miró, and Barceló, among others. A secret but way smaller art museum you can visit for free is the Fundación Juan March. Housed in a 17th-century manor extensively renovated in the early 20th century by architect Guillem Reynés i Font, it has displayed part of the Fundación Juan March art collection since 1990.
