How to Tip in Mallorca
Enjoying your unique luxury vacation stay at LA FINCA in Mallorca and exploring the island’s culinary delights, will bring you to many great eating spots. We have compiled a list of our favourites for you in our Welcome Manual, waiting for you upon arrival at LA FINCA.
Imagine you have just enjoyed a typical Mallorcan snack, e.g. Pamboli, and you have correctly asked for the bill in Spanish: “La cuenta, por favor” or in Catalan: “El compte, si us plau.”
The bill arrives on a little metallic tablet and now you are starting to calculate:
What should you be tipping?
The island’s gastronomy is international as tourists from all over the world have been coming to the island since the 60s and they brought some good propina (Spanish: tip).
However, Gastronomers in Mallorca lament a decline in tipping in recent years. Now guests only leave some cents to round up the numbers, waiters explain. This is probably due to the increase of paying by credit card. A habit Europe picked up because of the pandemic and which was already established in other countries. Though in some cultures e.g. in Japan, tipping is not common and even seen as rude, as the service should always be excellent. Sadly, many employees in Europe in the gastronomic branch are dependent on propina.
And how much should you tip now?
Well, the locals tend to give even less than visitors. They say it depends on the amount they have to pay. Locals are bold when it comes to a bad service; then they won’t leave anything to show their dissatisfaction!
Therefore, tipping is a sign of rewarding a very good service. So if you liked the service you should give a tip between 5-10% of the amount of your bill.
Something special in Mallorcan restaurants: you first pay the full amount of the bill as usual and the waiter will bring back the change on the little metallic tablet. Then you can leave the desired amount of tip on it.
We hope you have fun experiencing the different local cuisines on our lovely island!
